How Will I Know the Status of My Letter?

LSAC will send the recommender and applicant an email when the letter has been added to the applicant's application. Applicants can also track the status of reference letters in eRA Commons by viewing their applications.

If you are using a letter for multiple law school applications, please contact your recommenders as a courtesy to make sure they do not mind the letter being reused. You may do this by clicking on the letter in eRA Commons and looking for the "Reference Letters" field.

In some cases, an LSAC letter of recommendation will be returned to the recommender and/or deleted from your application. If this occurs, it is up to the recommender to re-submit their letter for your application.

To ensure the confidentiality of your letter, we recommend you only use letters that have been signed and sealed by the author. Do not submit unsealed letters to LSAC or the law schools.

When asking for a letter, please give your recommenders a clear and concise description of how they should write the letter. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings about the purpose of the letter. For example, if a letter is being submitted for an application in a particular year or to a particular law school specialty, you should describe this. This way the recommender knows they should only write a letter for this specific use. Also, do not ask a recommender to write you a general letter that can be assigned to any school.
